Distrito Federal

Aprendo algo cada día en el Distrito Federal, por ejemplo:

  • Salchicha means hot dog. Don’t order “un taco de salchica”
  • Count your change at the airport taxi stand, it’s wrong
  • Running at 7300+ feet is not the same as running at sea level
  • A hangover at 7300+ feet is not the same as a hangover at sea level
  • A vacuum repair shop is essentially 24-hour emergency automotive repair
  • You can buy anything on the street, really
  • “Shopping” means eating your meal at an outside table
  • Tacos al pastor are the greatest thing ever invented
  • “Comida” is food, of course, but it’s also the late (and long) Mexican lunch
  • “Sobre mesa” is the post-meal, pre-check conversation, this can last hours;
  • The dog trainers in Parque España could train Cujo
  • Weather.com is never right when it comes to the weather in México City
  • Traffic laws do not exist, pedestrians are targets
  • “Ahorita” means now, in a minute, later, tomorrow, and when I feel like it
  • The concept of “personal space” was never introduced to the Metrobus
  • You don’t want to be the only man in the women’s section of the Metrobus
  • The women’s section of the Metrobus is a moving beauty salon
  • A spoon can be used to curl eyelashes while on the Metrobus
  • A toothbrush can be used to apply mascara while on the Metrobus
  • “Tele Urban, tu comunicación, tu canal!”
  • “No hay” means there are no eggs, even though there are
  • “No hay” means there is no bottled water, even though there is
  • “No hay” means there is no bottled coke, even though there is
  • “No hay” means there is no Telmex in the Telmex Center
  • Nothing ever starts or ends on-time, ever
  • An old police radio from Michoacan is a sufficient bribe for speeding in DF
  • “Sushi” comes cooked or fried, often with melted cheese
  • If you like string cheese, queso de Oaxaca will be an addiction
  • One taco de seso is more than enough, trust me
  • There is no “test” to receive a driver’s license, just a line
  • Lucha is religion
  • “Viene! Viene!” is a profession
  • The police lights are always flashing, always
  • Cars have horns for a reason
  • The “microbus” is the ultimate drag racing machine
  • Thin branches make the best brooms
  • Mango juice is seriously underrated
  • Mexican mosquitos are basically flying ninjas
  • The Mexican people are incredibly kind and generous
  • México city is like no other place in the world.
  • to be continued . . .

  1. I can’t wait to ride the metro bus for the hell of it…..or maybe not. Too funny. I can just picture you enjoying the ride, asking yourself what am I doing here?
